Stokhem Wine Estate is nestled behind a large hedge on one of the steepest hills in South Limburg, with the winery itself located in Wijnandsrade Castle. It began with the planting of 6,000 Pinot Noir vines in 2004/2007, and since then, new plants have been added regularly. With the current Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vines, the grapes are used to make white, rosé, and red wines. The vines are planted on a subsoil of marl covered with loess, gravel, and flint. Loess is a fertile soil type rich in minerals. This can contribute to greater complexity in the wines and serves as the ideal soil for these typical Burgundian grape varieties. Since 2017, the 2.5-hectare vineyard has been managed by Jeroen van der Eng, who strives for sustainability in his vineyard, utilizing solar energy and rainwater, among other resources. In addition, Jeroen is involved in various initiatives to promote sustainability in Dutch winegrowing.
