Oranje Boven, Oranjewijn from the Netherlands
Orange wine, amber wine or orange wine. Many names for the same creature.
Orange Wine is a niche product within the wine industry that has become increasingly popular in recent years.
More and more Dutch winemakers are therefore opting for this wine style.
You can read what it is and who makes it here!
Orange Wine in a nutshell
Orange wine is made with white wine grapes.
Unlike 'ordinary' white wine, the seeds and skins are fermented along with the freshly pressed grape juice. It is actually a white wine, which is made using the red wine method. This way of working gives the wine its color, some tannins, bitters and many aromas. This makes it a completely different type of wine than white or red. Depending on the duration of the skin fermentation and the chosen grape, the aroma intensity and taste are determined.
The color
The color of wine largely comes from the skins. Where one white wine grape gives off a lot of color, such as the Souvignier Gris, which is widely used in the Netherlands, the other gives off very little color.
However, this says nothing or little about the flavor intensity.

Character
The most typical thing about orange wine is its versatile character. It is an odd duck that can fly in many directions. Basically, an orange wine is a wine that you can combine well with food and is often too heavy to drink like this.

Dutch Orange Wines
Because orange wine is a niche product, there are not many Dutch winemakers who make this. When Oranjewijn is made, this is often in small quantities.

Food Mating
Drink the wine in combination with food to discover even more. Oranje Boven is a fairly strong wine due to the tannins and bitters. This comes into its own with oily dishes.
Aperitif:
- Soft, young sheep cheese
- Black olives
- Grilled vegetables (lightly spiced)
- Naan with hummus & Baba Ganoush
Dishes:
- Pasta with homemade, fresh pesto
- Vitello Tonato
- Melanzane
- Steak tartare
- Grilled Lamb Chops
- Chicory salad with grapefruit and horseradish dressing
Remarkable:
In combination with steak tartare, the wine becomes slightly smoky.
Don't:
The wine does not come into its own with sweet dishes. Sweet gets the upper hand compared to bitters and acids, which is important for the character of the wine.
The design
Wine grapes such as the Solaris and Cabernet Blanc will not mean much to the majority of people. With that came our idea, why not translate the flavors, aromas, mouthfeel and body of the wine to the label?

Designer Tjitske Storm is a master of creating images where countless independent elements come together. Exactly what this complex wine needs to translate into images.
The drinker of the wine is challenged to extract the taste from the image. If you look closely at the label you will recognize the bitters of a grapefruit, the white pepper, lychee, mandarin and much more. The nice thing is that you also taste and smell more through the label. So there is a very nice interaction.
Signature:
Oranje Boven is the first wine that Design & Wijn releases itself. The Design & Wijn logo will always be the basis for the labels of our own wine line. In this way we can also enter into other collaborations with designers, without this being at the expense of our own identity and recognisability. It logo is printed in the capsules in our own corporate color and we will continue to use the same elegant bottle. We chose a transparent bottle for this wine. In this way, the light amber color is clearly visible.
Printing:
In our view, a quality wine always deserves high-quality printing. We opted for matt paper with a light structure that fits the traditional story behind the wine. A transparent foil print will be placed on the logo, with which we want to make the filming effect of the wine visual. For the implementation of the label we work together with unique label.
